Check out these haunted hotels, homes, theaters, and more as you journey along America’s most infamous road.

The Mine Shaft Tavern in Madrid, NM

Some people claim several old homes and churches in this town are haunted, but most of the ghost sightings and disturbances seem to happen around the Madrid Cemetery and the Mine Shaft Tavern, according to Only In Your State. Locals say you might see the ghost of an old mine worker when you look into a particular mirror at the tavern, according to The Huffington Post.

The Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma CityOK

Oklahoma Several spirits may call this historic hotel home, but one in particular has made her presence known. Effie, a former maid who allegedly had an affair with the hotel owner and lived on the top floor, is rumored to have jumped and fallen to her death at the hotel. While no one can confirm a woman named Effie ever lived or worked there, several guests have complained about a female spirit haunting them. In fact, several NBA players who stayed there while playing the Oklahoma City Thunder claim they were kept up all night by spirits, according to The New York Times. “This hotel creeps me out every time we come here,” former Denver Nuggets player Jordan Hamilton said.

Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff, AZ

This Arizona hotel is the birthplace of 11 supernatural legends, according to hotel staffers. Employees and guests alike claim there’s a woman who moves around a rocking chair in room 305 and a so-called “meat man” who likes to bother guests in room 220, according to the Hotel Monte Vista website. And if you’re looking for even more ghostly fun, housekeeping staffers are happy to let you roam around the venue.

McPike Mansion in Alton, IL

While no one’s lived in the home since the 1950s, several mediums claim they’ve felt the presence of a family that once lived there; possibly the McPike family who built the house and stayed there until 1936, according to the mansion’s website. Ghost hunters also detected the presence of several spirits when they stopped by to investigate for an episode of the Discovery Channel’s Ghost Lab. Guests can visit the home through the “Gabbing with the Ghosts” tour, which features time with an on-site medium who knows the supposed family well.

“Zombie Road” a.k.a. Lawler Ford Road in Wildwood, MO

Before it was the “Al Foster Trail,” this area was a hangout spot for teenagers in the 1950s. Over the decades there have been so many paranormal sightings, it was renamed “Zombie Road,” according to The Huffington Post. But catching a glimpse of the infamous ghost lights or the spirits that roam the area at night will be difficult; the local police force issues tickets to anyone caught wandering the area after dark.

The Coleman Theater in Miami, OK

The historic theater’s main area is said to have been built on top of an old crematorium and mortuary, according to Richard Southall, author of Haunted. When you walk through you may feel the fires burn once again, or catch sight of Mr. Roberts, the projection operator who worked at the theater for several years and is said to still roam around the venue. Employees of the aged theater, which first opened in 1929, are encouraged to share stories of their frightening experiences with visitors.

The Oatman Hotel in Oatman, AZ

The Oatman Hotel is frequented by a variety of rather friendly ghosts, according to AZ Central. “Oatie,” is a cheeky spirit who likes to moves glasses, turn lights on and off, and flush toilets out of the blue. You may also come across the spirits of actors Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, who spent their honeymoon at the humble hotel back in 1939. Several guests have reported heard laughter coming from outside the door of the honeymoon suite.


The “Hornet” Spook Light on East 50 Road in Quapaw, OK

As you drive through the Ozark Mountains you may spot the “Hornet Spook Light,” which was first seen by Native Americans more than 100 years ago, according to the Travel Channel. Residents in Quapaw, Oklahoma, and the Joplin, Missouri area have all claimed to see the tri-state phenomenon. Since it first appeared, experts, including the Army Corps of Engineers, have tried to debunk it, but all have failed. Locals and paranormal experts believe it’s a spirit, perhaps an old miner or one of the many Native Americans who were killed on the Trail of Tears, trying to communicate.

The Hollywood Roosevelt in Los Angeles, CA

In addition to several accounts of paranormal activity: lights and faucets that turn on and off, phone calls made from empty rooms, and a trumpet player that keeps guests up at night; there are also rumors that Marilyn Monroe’s ghost haunts the property, according to Time Out. This next one is a MUST stop, even if it is slightly off your route:

The Oman House in Hollywood, CA

The house sits in Beverly Hills, just north of famous Sunset Blvd, down the private drive from the Sharon Tate Murders of August 9th, 1969 at the hands of Charles Manson and his “Family”. Davis Oman likes to see people from all over the world stop and take a tour of this haunted home. Even acclaimed star of Rocky, Sylvester Stallone, stops by a couple time a year.
